What is Nearpod?
Nearpod has been described as a Powerpoint presentation on steroids. It is a basic slide presentation that incorporates a variety of learning engagements to increase participation, allow for differentiation, and collects data on the students. Nearpod is a transformative tool that allows the user to create their own presentation directly to Nearpod, upload an existing Powerpoint, Google Slide, or pdf file and incorporate the activities throughout. Working smarter and not harder, allows teachers to also have access to presentations already made by various users with K-12 experience also sharing their presentations and allowing you to copy and share material.
Nearpod allows users to incorporate a variety of activities and engagements into their presentations. Open ended questions, quizzes and polls allow for quick formative check ins. Draw it and collaborate allow students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding in a different format increasing motivation to participate. There are many other activities that can be embedded into the presentation, however the most recent is access to virtual reality content. Nearpod VR can be accessed using any handheld device, allowing student to take virtual field trips around the world. Whether on a desktop computer, tablet, or phone, Nearpod has the ability to be mobile, flexible and adaptable.

Step 1: Teacher can choose a presentation
Step 2: Launch with a class code Step 3: Choose to present in Live or Self Paced Mode Step 4: Engage your students with an interactive learning experience By using “blended learning, also known as hybrid learning or mixed-mode instruction, incorporat[ing] one or two learning strategies into traditional classroom teaching” (Lu, 2018, p.220), students will be more motivated to engage with the content, making deeper connections and learning. |
Live mode- The teacher has full control of the presentation. When they switch pages on their own tablet, it will switch the page on the student’s individual tablets as well. Teachers are also able to see student answers to the activities, and share responses to the class. This can allow for real time feedback to the class or student. It can also provoke and guide class discussions.
Self paced mode- allows students to view the presentation anywhere and on their own time. This is great for homework opportunities, flipped classrooms, or reinforcing material, just by adding the presentation code to Google Classroom or Student Planner. |
